Awana Porto Malai, Malaysia
In December 2009, nine dolphins from the Solomon Islands arrived in holding pens at Awana Porto Malai Resort, Malaysia. Awana Porto Malai is owned by Genting International, the same business that runs Resorts World, Singapore.
Six of the dolphins were exported by the Solomon Islands Marine Export Limited and three from the Solomon Islands Marine Wildlife Park, displaying a worrying cooperation between the many dolphin capture and export outfits presently operating in the Solomon Islands.
The Solomon Islands government earned approximately US$265,000 in tax for the dolphin export, with the Ministry of Fisheries and Environment receiving US$7,200 from in total.
The plans for the dolphins at Awana Porto Malai are currently unknown.
